Hummingbirds are the masters of torpor, because they have to be. Their feathers offer poor insulation, and they have incredibly high metabolic demands. Torpor allows them to check-out physiologically when they cannot maintain their normal 105 degrees Fahrenheit body temperature.

I have seen this before at my home, had about 12 feeders and one day I came out and saw 2 hanging up side down and thought they were dead, Went in the house and a while later they were gone. very strange feeling to see them hang. Very very interesting.

I have a Senegal parrot , about the size of a Lovebird, who sleeps upside down.

I also enjoy watching them feeding for their protein. It’s like a ballet dance in the sky. I love these amazing creatures.

      Hummingbirds are my favorite !!
Once, while in my bathroom,I heard what sounded like birds making a lot of noise.
When I.looked out my window, two little hummers were fighting over “their” special spot!!

AWESOME….. Thanks for sharing. I’ve had ’em sitting on my finger. Nothing as unique as your experience. Looked to me like a young Calliope followed by an Alan’s or possibly a Rufus visiting the feeder.
