The Squirrel, the Physicist and the Bird Feeder
A squirrel named Shirley moves in on the bird feeder and a physicist dreams up new ways to foil her. A rotating shield initially blocks her, but with each physicist’s innovation, Shirley uses her squirrel brain and powerful ability to climb, balance and jump to solve the problem and munch on the bird seeds. Along the way are some spectacular fails and amazing successes for this wild animal. These Fox Squirrel imported from the East Coast are admirable and irritating adversaries for sure. I have two resident squirrels these days. I love to watch them. My hanging feeder is absolutely squirrel-proof (the front porch of the feeder is spring-loaded and closes the food opening when too much weight lights on it. I really don’t care if my guys want to eat so I put a couple pounds of mixed food on the ground under the feeder. That attracts cardinals, squirrels, doves, house finches, sparrows, and other ground feeders. They all have fixed places and times the come to share the food. I also have a very fussy pair of mallards. They show up promptly at four o’clock every day The wife is very bossy and they have been coming for six years now. I love all my critters.
