The Original Stroll – 1958
On a local television dance show in Idaho in February 1958, local teens dance to one of the biggest dance crazes out of the late-1950’s called The Stroll, which originated from American Bandstand. This dance was performed in a line formed with boys on one side and girls on the other, creating an isle between them. The boy and girl in the front of the line would meet up in the middle, grab hands and stroll their way down the line, as the other kids in the line would move their way up to the front using the same dance steps that the couple moving down the line would use, but move from side to side instead. When the first couple made their way down the line, another couple would meet in the middle and stroll down the isle.
Today, a new version of The Stroll is done in the form of a group line dance, but this is how it was done originally. What did you think? Please leave a comment in the section below and remember to share the video and sign up for our free newsletter!

The stroll I remember doing (when young) had a lot more movement and laughter. These kids look like zombies LOL

Liz and Jean H: I agree with you all they showed do look like zombies. Not to be cruel but you all said the truth. That’s how their body was moving. That’s exactly how the zombies kind of moved in the first black and white horror movie Night of the Living Dead. I’m glad you all didn’t dance like that in your days. Lol!

Besides the high pants, old time music,&I sang along with it,too, (I graduated from jr. high in ’58), & we did the stroll, too, but, if my memory serves well, at least we had FUN doing it! These kids looked like zombies, not even a hint of a smile! Times were WAY different back then.
Line dancing is nothing like these somber kids. Kind of sad, to have been so repressed emotionally, but right “next door” came the ’60’s, & nothing has been the same since! Dancing should be fun, not mechanical!

Wow! They say history repeats its self. Everything we doing now was already done before. Now the stroll they were doing in this video didn’t have no soul, no rhythm and no feeling to it. And plus the dude pants is up too high to his chest…things that are precious need room to breathe.

Boy did this ever bring back memories, and the funny thing is, 54 years later, I still remember all the words to the song…..but I’ll be damned if I can remember where I put my glasses. Thank you for a pleasant trip to yesterday.
