In the 60s I dated a guy who worked at a service station and he would let me drive his car while he worked. He told me to bring in the car for gas and a can of compression.

I earned a buck an hour in working at one in the 50s. We sold gas and did minor maintenance like brakes and tune-ups. Learned a lot, much useful still.
