I worked at Mike Salta Pontiac in the early seventies. He is the one that literally wrote the book on selling by turnover to a closer after you got a customer to say “yes” they would like to purchase the car. Any kind of a “yes” would do. If I remember correctly Mike owned 23 dealerships all over including Hawaii. I learned a lot about people and how to read them which has served me well in life. That period of the seventies was during the gas shortage and big Pontiacs were almost impossible to sell. The Pontiac Astre was hard to get so we got used Chevrolet Vegas from one of the rental car companies and I regularly sold them for more than the Chevy dealer sold their new Vegas for. Alas, a car salesman’s life at that time was not good for a young married guy with a couple of kids. The hours worked and then drinking with the boss’s at night was brutal. Even though the money was good and upper management was offered, I chose a more family friendly career. Still, the wild deals and the atmosphere of the dealership makes for good memories.
