Man Digs Tunnels and Caverns Beneath Suburban Home
In 1949 the late Dr. Glen Havens of Kensington, California began enlarging the pit barbecue at his suburban home and, as one of his sons explained years later, “Dad started to dig and he kept going. He said it made him think…” With the assistance of his sons and some neighborhood children, by the time he was finished he had managed to dig some 700 feet of tunnels and caverns beneath the house. Dubbed “Havens’ Caves,” they were a popular neighborhood attraction in the 1950’s and ’60’s. The underground wedding reception that is alluded to in the video was for Havens’ daughter Carol, in 1960.
What did you think of this unusual home and the man who dug up these tunnels and caverns? Please let us know in the comment section below and remember to share the video and sign up for our free newsletter!

He probably was digging for gold or oil. That is unsafe and knowing that there are earth quakes.

Hello,
Very interesting.
I had an excavating company for about 20 years. To move that amount of dirt by hand is quite an amazing feat.
Sometimes working with children (child labor) is nicer than working with adults.
Apparently, the water table must be quite deep.
