High school in the 1950s – Photos of life in America
A look back at high school life from the 1950s.
In the 1950s, teenagers came into their own with more spending power, access to cars, and idolization of stars like James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. This was the age of getting cozy at drive-ins and cruising around town. Rock and Roll was born and music culture began to fundamentally change the culture of American high school students.
During this time, student sin high school relied on typewriters to write papers, and filmstrip projectors to watch videos in class. Graduation rates hovered around 60% for most of the decade because many students needed to help support their families by getting a job.
As the decade drew to a close, enrollment at universities was rapidly rising. More women than ever were leaving the household to pursue higher education opportunities.
