A lawyer named ‘Strange’ has passed away, leaving his friends and colleagues to mourn his loss…
As a tribute, one of his closest friends takes on the task of arranging for his tombstone.
He approaches the tombstone maker and requests an inscription that reflects both the lawyer’s profession and his rare virtue…
He suggests, ‘Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer’.
The tombstone maker, experienced in his craft, pauses to consider the request…
“That’s quite an inscription,” he says thoughtfully, “but it might cause some confusion.”
“People passing by might think that three different men are buried here: one named Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer… “
“That could lead to some misunderstandings.”
Puzzled but wanting to honor his friend appropriately, the man asks, “Well, what do you suggest?”
The tombstone ponders this for a moment, then with a gleam in his eye, he replies, “How about this… “
“We inscribe it as: ‘Here lies a man who was both honest and a lawyer’.”
“That way, whenever anyone walks by the tombstone and reads it, they will be certain to realize… “
“That’s Strange!”
