I was born in 1939. I remember being told how bad it was.
At 2 1/2 I started doing some shopping for my mom. At 5 I
was doing the family shopping which included using war
stamps. They were called something else but I can’t think
of it right now. They were used to buy mostly staples like
flour, sugar and other things. Our house had a stove like
the one in the video, it heated the whole house. On Saturday
ny brother, sister and myself took a bath that was heated
up and we were right by the coal stove. We didn’t have hot
running water or even a toilet. My sunday shoes were padded
with newspaper. I do have pictures of myself back then. I looked
like a waif. LOL!! All my clothes were hand-me-downs. As soon as I
was old enough I had to get some kind of a job and go to school
too. I had to buy my own clothes and shoes as I got older.
Being the oldest I didn’t have the things my other siblings
had. I was told that my Dad got work at as a farm hand.
My Mom told me great stories of the hobo’s. I remember my
Grandma used a black iron and it was heated on a stove. I
never knew my Mom’s mother as she died when my Mom was 15.
My Mom did raise the other kids and graduated from High School.
Three of my Aunt and Uncles were adopted by a Professor and his
wife so they got college degrees for $1 a year. Incredible times and
I’m not unhappy that I was a part of it. One of my favorite things was
the radio, I would listed to it every night before bed. I don’t know if
anyone will read this but I just wanted to relive it again. Not enough
room to tell all the things that I remember here. I hope you enjoyed
my telling part of what it was like back then.
