pola, this is an act of “nature”, but, I repeat, the “Human” being who owned those chickens, and then for his/her own sick pleasure ALLOWED that flock to almost kill the one is still guilty of animal cruely, for his/her amusement.
In nature, at least the picked on birds can escape, but in a coop situation, they have NO way to escape. NONE…………………..

You make a lot of assumptions there, Liz. More than likely, the chicken is just molting which is a natural and normal occurence. Pecking is a normal means of communication between chickens. Yes, they can get carried away with their communications which has been known to result in death. I seriously doubt anyone raising chickens would intentionally encourage such behavior.

Ruby, I don’t like taking a stand against you, but I’ve raised chickens. That was NOT “molting”. Nature has them lose some of their feathers slowly, so they are not naked, since it usually starts in the fall, just before winter. Molting never looks like that. His wing feathers have all the fluff removed, and the only reason that his wing feathers are still there, is because wing feathers have very large and deep shafts, and his cage mates couldn’t pull them out. And I did NOT say that he/she “encouraged” it, but obviously did NOTHING to prevent or stop it. It takes more than one day to do that amount of damage. Chicken beaks are pointed and very sharp, and break the skin of their victim (for whatever reason) and once naked then they begin ripping out flesh. Have you ever seen pix of commercial laying hens? As brand new chicks, the baby hens have the ends of their top beaks cut off. Painful, and bloody, but it prevents them from inflicting this kind of damage on each other. I don’t approve of that either. I wouldn’t call it “communicating”, it’s a slow and painful form of gang murder. Not pretty, and the one’s that have been attacked need to be removed ASAP, because the flock has one intention and that is to kill that particular bird, and most, if not all, in the flock take part in this attack. Don’t know if you believe in the Scriptures, but we were given “stewardship” over the earth and all living things on it. We’ve done a very poor job of it, but when we have animals, as pets, food, hobby, or whatever reason, it is our responsibility to take care of them, and protection is part of that stewardship. This poor bird was not taken care of, and hopefully, the owner did NOT put this poor rooster back with the flock after taking this picture, and using it as a sick joke.

The supposed “girl” on the top, left, looks like a young rooster to me.
And as for hen-pecked husband, all birds in a flock will pick on one bird, if left long enough with them, will kill it. They can be VERY cruel, for whatever reason. Not a good trait, but whoever the human was, who took these pictures, should be arrested ~ there is NO EXCUSE to allow any living thing to be tortured like this, just to make a “funny” comparison re: married vs. single. Not funny, even a little.
That’s nothing short of animal cruelty……………

He doesn’t, if he takes care of himself. She doesn’t either.
