Beep Beep – The Playmates (Animation)
Released in 1958. The song describes a duel between the drivers of a Cadillac and a Nash Rambler on the road. The song was on the Billboard Top 40 charts for twelve weeks and peaked at #20 ( I’ve since been told it peaked at #4, my mistake ). It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. Concurrently with this song, American Motors (AMC) was setting production and sales records for the Rambler models. What did you think? I loved that song, and it could be heard on the radio for years after its release! In 1962 I had a used 1959 mint green stick shift Rambler with ‘fins’, and the first to have those fold down flat..backwards front seats! It did have speed, unfortunately it also jammed in second gear (!)..and the only way I could release it was turn the car off, in traffic, open the hood, use my screwdriver to pop it into neutral, get back in the car, start it and very carefully put it into first gear (or maybe directly into 2nd gear) and hopefully…continue on my way! If not, it was back to step one! Never knew when it would happen. Ahh, yes, memories!

Yes, I remember that song. The premise is a stretch ( a Rambler doing 100+ mph in second gear, … or at all), but it’s cute.
