I agree with some comments that pointed out the perceived threat to the baby deer by the man holding an axe which must have provoked it to ‘attack’ the man. It is obvious that the deer was not interested in the other man without an axe.
It is likely that the baby deer must have acted in self defense. Edem

I, too, believe the deer was playing. The man looked stupid at trying to “defend” himself against this little fellow. Perhaps the man might have looked more macho if he had dropped his axe and played with the deer with both hands, but then, that would have been too human.

he should have just turned and walked away slowly . the little deer was protecting himself from a threat that instinct told him get away from since the guy kept bothering him he got more scared . poor little deer if the mom or dad had been there they would have made mincemeat out of that dummy . we have deer here on my property all the time . we leave them alone . in fact in back behind our barn a baby was born and raised there until he was able to follow his mom out . she made a nest back under the evergreens and they stayed there , she came and went and once in a while the dad would show up to check on them . my little dog and two cats went near them all the time with no problem . no tempting to fight at any time .. mama felt safe there . we even pet the baby a few times .

Very well put Jan. Finally a person that has an understanding, and compassion for creatures of the forest. They have a right to live in this world undisturbed just as we do.

I think that the baby deer was checking this man out for his safety. I like this one

I agree with you Alice, I feel when the guy first saw the young deer standing there watching him, rather that approaching it, he should have just turned away and gone in a different direction, rather than advancing on it.

The deer was playing with him and two seemed to be having a good time. A nice video!

I think the deer was bothered by the axe that the man had. The deer did not fool with the other man.

Baby deer is just defending itself against the man that is holding an axe, since it is all alone with no mother to protect it.

I agree with you Jean, with the guy holding an axe in his hand and making lunging movements towards the deer, I’m sure the little guy felt threatened.

Baby deer is standing it’s ground. The guy is revolving it by him going up toward it. The guy’s lucky it’s mother isn’t around, he’d be in big trouble. Mother would be defending her young.

Ha, ha, I agree with you. If “mama” deer had came charging out of the woods at that guy messing with her baby, she would have “really” put the “hurt’s” on him ha, ha.
